There is something so special about the sweet stories of Beatrix Potter. Her tales are full of mischievous rabbits, cozy cottages, garden paths, woodland animals, and beautiful watercolor illustrations. I created this Beatrix Potter curriculum for my own children in our homeschool, and over the past few weeks we completed it together as an author study. It quickly became one of the most memorable and meaningful units we have done, filled with literature, art, and hands-on learning that brought her stories to life in a beautiful way.

Reading Through Our Favorite Stories

Throughout our study, we spent time reading several of Beatrix Potter’s beloved stories aloud together. Our family favorite was The Tale of Peter Rabbit!

For each story we talked about the different characters and explored the different themes such as; kindness, consequences, and nature. My children especially loved comparing the personalities of Peter Rabbit and Jemima Puddle-Duck!

Focusing on one story each week allowed us to truly enjoy the rich language and charming details that make Beatrix Potter’s books so special.

Exploring Watercolor

One of our favorite parts of our author study was taking time to closely observe Beatrix Potter’s illustrations. Her watercolor paintings are filled with simple details and natural beauty, making them perfect inspiration for inspiring artists of all ages.

After looking through several illustrations together, my children experimented with their own watercolor paintings inspired by her work. We painted our favorite characters and other nature inspired scenes. This ended up becoming one of the most relaxing and enjoyable parts of the entire unit and really ignited a joy of painting in me!

Cross-Curriculum Studies

Not only did we explore the writings and artwork of Beatrix Potter, but we also touched on geography and science.

As we read, we spent time learning about rabbits, ducks, and frogs and their habitats as well as gardens, vegetables and flowers.

We also incorporated geography by learning about the English countryside where Beatrix Potter lived and wrote many of her stories. Looking at maps and photos helped the children better imagine the cozy cottages, rolling hills, and gardens that inspired her writing and illustrations.

A Final Celebration

To celebrate the end of our Beatrix Potter study, we planned a special day together that perfectly captured the spirit of the unit. First, we planted our family garden together. It felt like such a fitting way to end weeks of reading and nature study.

After gardening, we hosted a simple tea party including our tea biscuits from our Geography study, tea cups, and a few favorite Beatrix Potter stories read aloud one final time. The children absolutely loved it, and it created such a sweet memory to close out our study. We finished our special day with a family movie night of The Tale of Peter Rabbit.

Why We Loved This Author Study

This Beatrix Potter unit reminded me that some of the best learning experiences happen slowly and gently. We focused on beautiful stories, meaningful conversations, creativity, and time spent together. It combined so many different topics in a way that felt natural and engaging for my young children.

If you are looking for a cozy and enriching author study to do in your homeschool, then this might be the unit for you!  This author study time quickly became our favorite part of the school day and I'm sure the memories will stay with my children for years to come.
